Holmdel

Township in Monmouth County, east-central New Jersey, 24 km/15 mi southeast of New Brunswick; population (1990) 11,500.

Settled in the 1630s, and known as Freehold before that name came to refer to the current borough, Holmdel was originally an centre of orchards and viticulture. It is now a growing suburb along the Garden State Parkway. AT&T Bell Laboratories, a major communications research facility, is situated here, as is the large Garden State Arts Center, with its 5,300-seat amphitheatre.
