Holmes, Larry (1949– )

US boxer. World heavyweight champion 1978–85, Holmes made 20 successful defences of his title, stopping 15 of his opponents. When he lost his crown to Michael Spinks in 1985, he was one short of equalling Rocky Marciano's professional heavyweight record of 49 straight victories.

1978–85

Holmes lost a re-match with Spinks in 1986, and tried unsuccessfully on three subsequent occasions between 1988 and 1995 to regain a heavyweight title. In 1996, at the age of 46, having enjoyed a professional career spanning 23 years he announced the end of what he promised was his final come-back. However, he fought on until finally retiring in 2002.
