Holstein, Franz (Friedrich) von (1826–1878)

German composer. Although trained for the army, he studied music under Griepenkerl. When he had written two operas, Zwei Nächte in Venedig and Waverley (after Scott), Moritz Hauptmann persuaded him in 1852 to take entirely to music and gave him further instruction.
