Holtfreter, Johannes (Friedrich Karl) (1901–1992)

US embryologist born in Germany. After over 40 years investigating morphogenesis and differentiation in amphibian, avian, and mammalian embryos, he concluded that development of specialized organs from the undifferentiated early embryo is the result of both directed cell movement and separations and reassociations controlled by selective cell adhesion.

Born in Richtenberg, he taught in Germany 1928–38, McGill University, Montréal 1942–46, then went to the USA to Rochester University 1946–69.
