Holywood

Town in County Down, Northern Ireland, 10 km/6 mi northeast of Belfast; population (2001) 12,000. Its priory church dates from the 12th century, but the town grew mainly in the late 19th century when it was linked by rail with Belfast.

The priory church stands on the site of a 7th-century church (founded by St Laserian) and a Franciscan monastery.
