Home Rule League

Organization demanding home rule for India, established September 1916. The Indian demand for home rule was inspired by the unsuccessful Easter Rising in Ireland the previous April. It was launched by theosophist and educationalist Annie Besant, who received support from the leading Indian nationalist Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-1920). She was briefly interned in Madras (now Chennai) in 1917. The organization faded after the introduction of the India Act 1919 and the initiation of Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation campaign.
