Homestake Mine

Historic gold mine in the city of Lead, Lawrence County, located in the Black Hills area of western South Dakota, 48 km/30 mi northwest of Rapid City; population (1990) 3,600. Gold was discovered here during the Black Hills gold rush of 1876. For a long time, Homestake Mine was the largest gold mine in the USA.

Homestake Mine has been working almost continuously since its foundation. It has miles of underground tunnels reaching a maximum depth of 2,440 m/8,000 ft, as well as extensive surface mining operations. It continues to operate as a commercial concern, but is now also a tourist attraction.
