Hondo

City and seat of Medina County, south-central Texas, 58 km/36 mi west of San Antonio, on Hondo Creek; population (2000) 7,900. It was settled largely by Germans in the mid-19th century and incorporated in the 1890s, then dissolved and reincorporated in the 1940s. Hondo is a ranch trade centre with some manufacturing, and also the site of a World War II air base.
