Honesdale

Borough in Wayne County, northeastern Pennsylvania, 39 km/24 mi northeast of Scranton; population (1990) 5,000.

Honesdale was founded in 1826 as a barge canal terminal and named after Philip Hone, president of the coal-shipping Delaware and Hudson Canal Company. The first steam locomotive in the USA, the Stourbridge Lion, was brought here from England in 1829 for a trial run hauling coal, but proved to be too heavy for existing rails. A replica of the engine is on display here. Honesdale's modern manufactures include textiles and finished garments.
