Hooper, C(laude) E(rnest) (1898-1954)

US broadcast audience analyst. While working in advertising he developed techniques to research radio audiences and in 1938 he founded his own New York firm. His ‘Hooperatings’, based on telephone pollings of listeners, soon became the industry standard, attracting controversy over their methodology and effect on programme quality. He sold his national ratings service in 1950.

He was born in Kingsville, Ohio.
