Hooverville

Colloquial term for any shantytown built by the unemployed and destitute in the USA during the Depression 1929-40, named after US president Herbert Hoover whose policies were blamed for the plight of millions. He also lent his name to ‘Hoover blankets’ (newspapers) and ‘Hoover flags’ (turned-out, empty pockets).
