Hopkins, Mark (1802–1887)

US educator and religious leader, president of Williams College 1836–72 and of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions 1857–87. He was also known as a popular lecturer and author on religious subjects.

Born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, Hopkins was educated at Williams College and received an MD degree from Berkshire College 1829. In 1830 he was appointed professor of philosophy at Williams College and president 1836–72. Increasingly involved in religious affairs, Hopkins was ordained a Congregationalist minister 1836.
