Hopkins, Johns (1795–1873)

US philanthropist and entrepreneur. He founded the Johns Hopkins University 1876 and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, both in Baltimore, Maryland.

Hopkins was born in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. At the age of 17 he went to Baltimore and became a wholesale grocer. He invested in the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, eventually amassing a large fortune. This he devoted to various philanthropic purposes. In addition to the institutions bearing his name, he presented Baltimore with a public park.
