Hopkinson, Tom (1905-1990)

English journalist. After working as a freelance journalist and in advertising, he was assistant editor of The Clarion (1934), assistant editor of Weekly Illustrated (1934-38), and, in 1938, co-launched Picture Post, which he edited for ten years from 1940. He edited Lilliput (1941-46), was features editor of the News Chronicle (1954-56), and editor of Drum Magazine (1958-61). Hopkinson was also director for Africa of the International Press Institute (1963-66) and held academic posts at the universities of Sussex and Minnesota, later becoming first director of the centre for journalism studies at University College, Cardiff (1970-75).

Hopkinson was born in London, England. He was educated at St Edward's School, Oxford, and Pembroke College, Oxford University. His publications include A Wise Man Foolish (1930), Mist in the Tagus (19460, The Transitory Venus (1948), The Lady and the Cut-Throat (1958), In the Fiery Continent (1962), South Africa (1964), and Picture Post, 1938-1950 (1970).
