Hopkinton

Town in Middlesex County, east-central Massachusetts, 42 km/26 mi west-southwest of Boston; population (1998 est) 11,400. It has become well known as the starting point of the Boston Marathon. Predominantly rural (though with some shoe production in the early 19th century), Hopkinton has experienced suburban growth since the 1960s.

It was established in 1715. Historically, Hopkinton is significant as the birthplace of Daniel Shays, leader of a rebellion by debt-ridden farmers in 1786–87.

Hopkinton

Town in Washington County, southwestern Rhode Island, on the Connecticut border; population (1990) 6,900.

Hopkinton, which is situated on Interstate 95, includes the villages of Ashaway, Canonchet, Hope Valley, Hopkinton, and Rockville, as well as part of Potter Hill. Agriculture and the manufacture of textiles and wood products are important. The opening of a casino in nearby Ledyard, Connecticut, in 1992 was expected to stimulate the town's growth as a leisure resort.
