Hoppner, John (1758–1810)

English portrait painter. He painted many society figures of the day, including the royal princesses, William Pitt, and Admiral Nelson, and became portrait painter to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) in 1789. A follower of Joshua Reynolds, he rivalled Thomas Lawrence in popularity. His style, especially in his portraits of women and children, was noted for its grace and charm, as in Mrs Williams (Tate Gallery, London).
