Hoquiam

City in Grays Harbour County, western Washington State; population (2000) 9,100. Situated on Grays Harbour at the mouth of the Hoquiam River, the city is immediately adjacent to Aberdeen.

Hoquiam was once the site of the greatest stand of Douglas firs in the entire Pacific Northwest, and later became, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, a centre for lumbering, sawmilling, shipbuilding, and cattle raising. Its shipbuilding industries experienced a boom during World War II. The city is now surrounded by large areas of clearcut logging. It manufactures lumber products; fishing activity is based around salmon and tuna, with canneries packaging local fish and oysters.
