Caesarea

The amphitheatre at Caesarea in Israel. This was built by King Herod, who named it after the Roman emperor Augustus. The amphitheatre would once have held 20,000 spectators.

Ancient city in Palestine (now Qisarya). It was built by Herod the Great 22–12 BC, and named in honour of the Roman emperor Augustus. The constructions included an artificial harbour (portus Augusti). Caesarea was the administrative capital of the Roman province of Judaea.
