Hordaland

County of southern Norway, on the Atlantic coast; area 15,650 sq km/6,040 sq mi; population (1995) 425,200. There are many islands off the coast. On the mainland, mountains dominate the landscape. Hardangervidda national park spills over into the adjoining counties of Buskerud and Telemark to the east. Hydroelectric development has created several industrial centres; fishing and farming are also important, and Hordaland is popular with tourists. The main town is Bergen.
