Hormuz

Small island in the Strait of Hormuz belonging to Iran; area 41 sq km/16 sq mi; population (1996 est) 2,800. It is strategically important because oil tankers leaving the Gulf for Japan and the West have to pass through the strait to reach the Arabian Sea.

It was occupied by the Portuguese from 1515 to 1622.
