HormuzSmall island in the Strait of Hormuz belonging to Iran; area 41 sq km/16 sq mi; population (1996 est) 2,800. It is strategically important because oil tankers leaving the Gulf for Japan and the West have to pass through the strait to reach the Arabian Sea.
