Horne, Marilyn (1934– )

US mezzo-soprano who made her operatic debut in Los Angeles in 1954. From 1956 she sang for several years in Europe, then appeared in San Francisco in 1960, where her Marie in Wozzeck was acclaimed. She settled into an active career on stage and in recitals, making her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut in 1970. Her other well-known roles include Carmen.

Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania, she studied with Lotte Lehmann and others in California.
