Hornell

City in Steuben County, southwestern New York State; population (1990) 9,900. Hornell stands on the Canisteo River, 90 km/56 mi south of Rochester.

Settled in 1790 as Upper Canisteo, it was renamed in 1820 in honour of the early settler George Hornell. Following the arrival of the Erie Railroad in 1850, Hornell experienced its greatest period of growth. Industries in the city now include textile and hosiery mills and railway engineering works. Other manufactures include ball bearings, glass, dresses, gloves, and wooden mouldings.
