Horowitz, Vladimir (1904–1989)

Russian-born US pianist. He made his US debut in 1928 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. A leading interpreter of Liszt, Schumann, and Rachmaninov, he toured worldwide until the early 1950s, when he retired to devote more time to recording. His rare concert appearances 1965–86 displayed undiminished brilliance.

Horowitz married Arturo Toscanini's daughter, Wanda, in 1933. In 1986 he made a pilgrimage to his homeland, giving a brilliant performance at the Moscow Conservatory of Music.
