Horowitz, Vladimir (1904-1989)

Russian-born US pianist. He made his US debut in 1928 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. A leading interpreter of Liszt, Schumann, and Rachmaninov, he toured worldwide until the early 1950s, when he retired to devote more time to recording. His rare concert appearances 1965-86 displayed undiminished brilliance.

Horowitz married Arturo Toscanini's daughter, Wanda, in 1933. In 1986 he made a pilgrimage to his homeland, giving a brilliant performance at the Moscow Conservatory of Music.
