Horrocks, Jeremiah (c. 1617-1641)

English astronomer. He correctly predicted that there would be a transit of Venus on 4 December 1639, the first time such a phenomenon had ever been seen.

He lived at Toxteth Park, Liverpool, and went to Cambridge 1632-35. When he returned home he devoted himself to study, especially of astronomy, in which he hoped to extend the work of Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler.

Among his surviving writings are Venus in Sole Visa 1662 and Jeremiae Horroccii Opera Posthuma, published by the Royal Society.
