Hortensius Hortalus, Quintus

    0.03 sec.

Hortensius Hortalus, Quintus (114-50 BC)

Roman orator and principal rival of Cicero. A supporter of the status quo, he defended its representatives when they were accused of malpractice in provincial administration or of bribery when canvassing for office.

After his consulship 69 BC, Hortensius participated less in politics but from 63 BC onwards he became more active again. None of his speeches has survived, but Cicero states that his style was ‘Asianic’, or florid and more suited to hearing than to reading.
