Horvat, Milan (1919– )

Croatian conductor. He studied at Zagreb and was conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra 1946–53 and 1958–69, and chief conductor of the Radio Telefis Éireann (RTE) Symphony Orchestra in Dublin, Ireland, 1953–58. He was principal conductor of the Zagreb Opera 1958–65, giving many Yugoslav first performances, and of the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra 1969–75. He gave many concerts as guest conductor elsewhere in Europe (including the Salzburg Festival 1970, Krzysztof Penderecki's St Luke Passion). He became principal conductor of the Zagreb Symphony Orchestra in 1975. Recordings include music by Shostakovich and Hindemith.
