Hosack, David

Hosack, David (1769–1835)

US physician. He was one of the first physicians to use the stethoscope and to advocate vaccination; he was the first American surgeon to ligate the femoral artery in 1808. In 1804 he was attending surgeon at a duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. He helped found Bellevue Hospital in 1820.

He was born in New York City. He was professor of materia medica at Columbia University 1797–1811 and taught the theory and practice of medicine at New York's College of Physicians and Surgeons 1811–26.
