hot-swapping

In computing, a technique that allows a user to exchange components without having to shut down the entire system.

The most common examples of hot-swapping are USB and PCMCIA (personal computer memory card interface adapter), or PC Card, components: a user with only one PCMCIA slot can exchange a modem for a network card or hard disk while the machine is running. Many USB devices are also designed to work in this ‘plug and play’ ways. Special software recognizes the components and allows their immediate use.
