Hotchkiss gun

French machine gun, adopted by the French army 1897. Several models existed but the most common was a light air-cooled, gas-operated weapon fed with ammunition in metal strips, which was used as a support weapon by infantry. Heavier, tripod-mounted, versions were used for sustained defensive fire and in an anti-aircraft role.
