Hothby, John

    0.03 sec.

Hothby, John (c. 1410-1487)

English Carmelite, music scholar, composer, and doctor of theology. He graduated at Oxford and lectured there in 1435. He probably travelled in Spain, France, and Germany, and settled in Florence, Italy, around 1440; he possibly also lived in Ferrara. He was called Giovanni Ottobi in Italy, and was at Lucca from about 1468 to 1486. He taught there, but was recalled to England by Henry VII. He wrote a number of theoretical treatises. Some of his sacred and secular compositions were entered in the Faenza Codex.
