Houghton-le-Spring

Town in Tyne and Wear, England, 8 km/5 mi southwest of Sunderland; population (2001) 10,100. There were formerly coal mines here, now largely replaced by light industries.

The ancient church at Houghton-le-Spring contains the tomb of the educator Bernard Gilpin (died 1583), the ‘Apostle of the North’, who was rector here and also founded the grammar school.
