Houghton-le-Spring

Town in Tyne and Wear, England, 8 km/5 mi southwest of Sunderland; population (2001) 10,100. There were formerly coal mines here, now largely replaced by light industries.

The ancient church at Houghton-le-Spring contains the tomb of the educator Bernard Gilpin (died 1583), the ‘Apostle of the North’, who was rector here and also founded the grammar school.

05pm on Tuesday a two vehicle injury road traffic collision occurred on the B1260 Durham Road at Houghton-le-Spring outside the Mill Public House.
Firefighters managed to get the occupant from the terraced house in Lime Avenue, Houghton-le-Spring, shortly before 1am.
Elliot Gowland, 36, of Houghton-le-Spring, who works in manufacturing, said: "Only Fools And Horses.
