Houlton

Town and seat of Aroostook County, in northern Maine; population (2000) 6,500. It is situated on Route US 1 and the Meduxnekeag River, between wooded ridges along the New Brunswick border.

Houlton, an early lumber centre and military station, was central to the ‘Aroostook War’, a border dispute that broke out between the USA and Canada in 1839. The arrival of railway lines here in 1862 and 1894 stimulated development. The town is now the market centre for a major potato-growing area, and also serves as a base for hunting, fishing, and recreational activities in the region. Industries include potato shipping and warehousing, flour milling, and the manufacture of potato starch, fertilizer, and wood products.
