Housatonic

River in Massachusetts and Connecticut; length 239 km/149 mi. It rises in the Berkshire Hills in Massachusetts, and flows southwards through Connecticut to enter Long Island Sound between Stratford and Milford, falling 959 feet over its course. It is used as a source of hydroelectric power and has many industrial settlements along its banks.

There have been pollution problems caused by industry, including the controversial release of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) at Pittsfield.
