haute couture

High-quality made-to-measure clothing designed by a couturier (a fashion designer who produces couture clothing). It is an expensive line of clothing which relies heavily upon the work of specialists to execute a couturier's design. Many couture houses have closed since the mass production of inexpensive ready-to-wear clothing was introduced in the 1950s.

The production of haute couture is regulated by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne, the union of dress designers founded in Paris 1868. A system similar to that of the Paris couture houses was operated by British court dressmakers, and also by fashion houses designing and making for royalty.
