Hovenden, Thomas

Hovenden, Thomas (1840–1895)

Irish-born US painter who emigrated to the USA in 1863 and was based in Philadelphia. A deeply sympathetic man, he is known for his genre studies of black Americans, such as Breaking Home Ties 1890. He died trying to save a young girl from an oncoming train.

He was born in Dummanway, Ireland.
