Howard, Alan Mackenzie

Howard, Alan Mackenzie (1937– )

English actor. His appearances with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) include the title roles in Henry V, Henry VI, Coriolanus, and Richard III. Howard's Broadway debut came as Theseus and Oberon in a 1971 RSC production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. His also played in Good (1982) and Waiting for Godot (1997).

Howard joined the RSC in 1966, becoming an associate artist of the company in 1967. He made his film debut in Victim (1961) and played small roles in The V.I.P.s (1963) and The Americanization of Emily (1964). He has also appeared in Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), Oxford Blues (1984), and The Secret Rapture (1993). His US television credits include Notorious Woman (1975), Double Helix (1987), six episodes of Frederick Forsyth Presents (1990–91), and Anna Lee: Headcase (1994). He appeared in the television series Foyle's War II in 2003 and returned to the stage in 2004 in The Hollow Crown. He was made a CBE in 1998.
