Howe, Gordie (Gordon) (1926- )

Canadian ice-hockey player, known as ‘Mr Hockey’, who played for the Detroit Red Wings (National Hockey League, NHL) 1946-71, the Houston Aeros (World Hockey Association, WHA) 1973-77, the New England Whalers (WHA) 1977, and the Hartford Whalers (NHL) 1978-80. He won the Hart Trophy for most valuable player six times during 1952-63. In the NHL, he scored more goals (801), assists (1,049), and points (1,850) than any other player in ice-hockey history until beaten by Wayne Gretsky. Howe played professional hockey until he was over 50.
