Howe, James Wong (1899–1976)

Chinese-born US director of film photography. One of Hollywood's best cinematographers, he is credited with introducing the use of hand-held cameras and pioneering the development of deep-focus photography, where subjects both near and far are in sharp focus. His work includes The Alaskan (1924), Funny Lady (1975), and Sweet Smell of Success (1957).

He won Academy Awards for his black-and-white work on The Rose Tattoo (1955) and Hud (1963).
