Howe, Oscar

Howe, Oscar (1915–1983)

Yankton Sioux painter. He served as art director at the Pierre (South Dakota) Indian School 1953–57 and as professor and artist-in-residence at the University of South Dakota 1957–81. His many exhibitions and illustrated books won numerous awards. In 1960 he was named South Dakota Artist Laureate.

He was born in Joe Creek, South Dakota.
