Haora

City of West Bengal, northeast India, on the right bank of the River Hooghly opposite Kolkata (formerly Calcutta); population (2001) 1,008,700. The capital of Haora district, it has jute and cotton factories; rice, flour, and saw mills; iron and steel works and chemical factories; and railway engineering works. Haora suspension bridge, opened in 1943, spans the river. It is on a railway junction.
