Hradec Králové

Capital of East Bohemia, in the Czech Republic, on the River Elbe, 100 km/63 mi east of Prague; population (2000) 97,200. It is an industrial town producing chemicals, photographic equipment, and textiles. The Gothic cathedral is partly 14th century.

In 1866 Prussian forces, led by Otto von Bismarck, defeated the Austrians northwest of the town at the Battle of Sadowa, ending the Seven Weeks' War and successfully excluding Austria from Germany.
