Huambo

Town and capital of Huambo province, central Angola; population (2007 est) 240,600. Founded in 1912, it was known as Nova Lisboa (‘New Lisbon’) 1928–78. It is an agricultural centre, and is linked by rail to Lobito. A battle here in 1993 between MPLA (government forces) and UNITA (right-wing rebels) lasted 55 days and cost an estimated 13,500 lives; UNITA won. It fell to government forces in 1994, and UNITA leader, Jonas Savimbi, fled. Huambo was the former headquarters of UNITA.
