Huasco

Seaport town in the region of Atacama, in northern Chile, 3 km/2 mi upstream from the mouth of the Huasco River and 150 km/93 mi southwest of Copiapó; population (2002) 6,400. Huasco is the centre of a fruit-growing district, and is noted for its grapes and raisins. Minerals, especially iron ore, are shipped from the port here.
