Huber, Hans

Huber, Hans (1852-1921)

Swiss composer. After attending seminary at Solothurn, he studied music under Carl Munzinger there and later at the Leipzig Conservatory, Germany. After teaching in Alsace, Germany (now France), he settled in Basel, Switzerland, in 1877. In 1889 he became professor at the Conservatory there and succeeded Selmar Bagge as its director in 1896, retiring in 1918.

Opera

Weltfrühling (1894), Kudrun (1896), Simplicius (1912), Die schöne Bellinde, Frutta di mare (1918).

Choral

Masses, cantatas.

Orchestral

nine symphonies (No. 2 on pictures by Böcklin) and other orchestral works Sommernächte, Serenade, Carneval, and Römischer Carneval; four piano concertos, violin concerto.

Other

much chamber music; piano music; songs, including Hafiz cycle.
