Huesca

Capital of Huesca province in Aragón, northeast Spain, situated on the River Isuela; population (2001) 46,200. Industries include engineering and food processing. Among its buildings are a 13th-century cathedral and the former palace of the kings of Aragón.

Huesca was the site of the first university in Spain, established by Quintus Sertorius in the 1st century BC; he was assassinated here in 72 BC.
