Humphreys, Joshua

Humphreys, Joshua (1751–1838)

US shipbuilder and naval architect. Congress named him to refit eight merchant vessels as the first Continental naval vessels in 1775. He was the first naval constructor 1794–1801; he designed five of the first six US frigates, and he personally supervised the building of the USS United States (launched in 1797).

He was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
