Humphreys, Joshua

Humphreys, Joshua (1751-1838)

US shipbuilder and naval architect. Congress named him to refit eight merchant vessels as the first Continental naval vessels in 1775. He was the first naval constructor 1794-1801; he designed five of the first six US frigates, and he personally supervised the building of the USS United States (launched in 1797).

He was born in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
