Capital of Hungary, industrial city (chemicals, textiles) on the River Danube; population (2001) 1,777,900. Buda, on the right bank of the Danube, became the Hungarian capital in 1867 and was joined with Pest, on the left bank, in 1872.

History

The site of a Roman outpost in the 1st century, Buda was the seat of the Magyar kings from the 14th century. It was later occupied by the Turks, and was under Habsburg rule from the end of the 17th century. In 1867 Hungary was given self-government, and the city of Budapest was created in 1872 when the towns of Buda and Pest were joined. Hungary became independent in 1918, with Budapest as capital. The city was occupied by German troops in World War II, and was the site of a seven-week siege by Soviet troops, finally being liberated in February 1945. It was also the scene of fighting between the Hungarians and Soviet troops in the uprising of 1956.
