Hungarian language

Hungarian language

Member of the Finno-Ugric language group, spoken principally in Hungary but also in parts of the Slovak Republic, Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro. Hungarian is known as Magyar among its speakers. It is written in a form of the Roman alphabet in which s corresponds to English sh, and sz to s.

Like the Turks, the Magyars originated in northeastern Asia; the term ‘Hungarian’ appears to derive from the Turkish on ogur (‘ten arrows’), describing their ten tribes; this may also be the origin of the English ‘ogre’.
